Nowadays, the great advancements in electrical machine industry are caused by extensive utilization of permanent magnets. It remains to be seen whether production line changes and expenses incurred by the machines are significant. This paper addresses a new rotor prototype for single-phase shaded pole line start permanent magnet synchronous motor in a way that its structure does not change significantly, based on a widely used single-phase shaded pole induction motor. The designed machine performances are obtained using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) by transient 2D analysis software. Then, three different designs are analyzed. The first design, i.e. the base model, is a small industrial shaded pole induction motor; the second one is a medium-sized shaded pole induction motor with an output power equal to that of the third proposed model. Also, a new rotor is developed with a stator similar to that of the first model. Additionally, the authors will demonstrate that the recommended inset magnet structure has acceptable features, e.g. it has simpler structure and causes less changes in conventional shaded pole induction motors compared with other interior kinds of LSPMSM. Lastly, experimental tests are used to verify the validity of the prototype motor.
