Building Digital Memory for Historic Urban Heritage: The Beijing Memory Project Experience

The Beijing Memory Project (BMP) was developed along practical, theoretical and technical lines. After over five years of construction, the project has developed its own framework and made significant progress. It now can be taken as a real example of how to build up digital memory for city cultural heritage with the aim of innovative protection and inheritance. BMP proved to be a replicable and scalable experience in the field of city cultural heritage protection. This paper presents lessons learned in BMP, focusing on the framework of "One Repository with Two Sites" and its progress, as well as the characteristics formed during the implementation of BMP. In conclusion, we propose the concept of digital memory, an interdisciplinary field with a bright and potentially exciting future that multiple disciplines must be prepared to engage in.
