For the interaction with communication systems, human-in-the-loop simulation tests and theoretical modeling methods have limitations in implementing all potential incidents that may encounter in real flight operations, during a sufficient test time. To design cognitive communication systems in the cockpit based on more accurate pilot performance prediction, acquisition of all pilots' behavior data through a full operation time in the cockpit may help identifying more reliable behavioral factors. The surface transportation field has already exploited huge driver behavior data collected by camera, audio, or pupil capturing sensors for their naturalistic driving studies. To apply this research paradigm to the aerospace field for successful collection of both predicted and unpredicted pilot behavior data during flight operations, this paper suggests recommendations for the research design of naturalistic flying study.
