Ship survivability has been defined as providing the capability of a warship to “Fight Through” damage. In the design of navalrncombatants, providing “Fight Through” capability is often achieved with structural vulnerability reduction measures such as blastrnhardened bulkheads and integrated box girders. Unfortunately, the ad-hoc process of naval design has precluded the development ofrnconsistent criteria. Within this paper, the authors discuss the application criteria and survivability effectiveness of blast hardenedrnbulkheads and integrated box girders on a midsize naval combatant and provide early stage rules for each structure’s respectivernapplication and influence within the design of future naval combatants.
