Conduct of operations concerns how work is performed in a manufacturing unit with the overallrnobjective of: structuring operational tasks in a manner consistent with the organizations riskrntolerance, ensure that every task is performed deliberately and correctly, and minimizingrnvariations in performance [1]. Conduct of operations management systems reduces the likelihoodrnof human error. The terms operating discipline and engineering discipline describe how to bringrna consistent approach to various operations and engineering tasks. With consistently andrndiscipline errors are reduced. Management discipline is a new term described in this paper thatrndetails systems that can be put into place by management to ensure operating and engineeringrndiscipline are effective and continue to improve the process safety culture.rnThis paper will detail best practice tools that will help manufacturing sites make immediaternimprovements in operating, engineering, and management discipline areas of conduct ofrnoperations. Some practice areas covered include:rnManagement Discipline – Performance model, continuity of operation, fatigue management,rnwork environment, inspection of operating and engineering discipline, and incident management.rnEngineering Discipline – Selection and monitoring of safe operating limits with documentationrnof technical basis, consequences of deviation, steps to correct and how these limits tie intornoperating discipline and alarm management.rnOperational Discipline – shift instructions, shift notes, shift handover, development of operatorrnevaluation rounds, abnormal event communications, equipment line-up and sample collection.
