The original design for an underground natatorium in Harbin adopted the pile foundation as the basement, the frame as the main structure and the cast-in-situ concrete beam-slab system for the floor. However, the beams in this design were replaced by prestressed concrete beams after the construction of the basement due to their big heights. The expense spent on the previous design and the modified one has been compared in this paper, which shows that the design involved the prestressed concrete beams could cut the cost, as well as decrease the beam height, increase net height of the room, and lead to better effect of the natatorium.
