RISK MANAGEMENT AND RELATIONSHIPS SUCCESSFULLY OVERCOME CHALLENGES

The WRCT Tunnel in Northern Kentucky is currently under construction and therntunnel has successfully holed-through. The design, procurement and construction ofrnthis tunnel included several political, technical and construction-related risks and challenges,rnincluding: methane gas; low cover; internal corrosion; creek crossings; strongrnpublic opposition; the rejection of bids, and a 40-year-old TBM. This paper describesrnthe design and construction methods used to identify and mitigate the various challengesrnto the project’s success. More importantly, the paper describes the collaborationrnduring construction between the Owner, Engineer and Contractor and how these relationshipsrnare as important as the Contract Documents to a successful project.
