This paper provides an overview of the $15 million shaft and associated hydraulicrnstructures designed to be constructed within the Waller Creek Stormwater TunnelrnProgram, a tunnel in downtown Austin, Texas, that helps prevent severe flooding andrnstream bank erosion by controlling the volume of water in the creek. The features ofrnthe project, including the shaft, spillway, lagoon, and associated river works requiredrnfor the discharge of the submerged siphon into Lady Bird Lake are described. The shaftrnis sunk within a cofferdam in the lake through overburden, Austin Limestone, and thernEagleford Shale. This paper explains the engineering rationale and identifies the geotechnicalrnconditions and environmental constraints that dictated the design featuresrnand the likely required construction methodology.
