The new tunneling technology in soft ground called URUP (Ultra Rapid Underpass)rnwas developed in an attempt to allow construction of a roadway underpass tunnel in thernbusy intersection where the very limited work space was available while being requiredrnan accelerated construction schedule to minimize adverse impacts to the local environment.rnThe URUP method enables a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) to launch and holernthrough directly from ground level safely maintaining the ground stability from zero tornultra thin ground coverage and eliminate the need for the large-scaled open cut excavationrntypically required for launching and receiving a TBM.rnThis paper introduces a new shield tunneling technology named URUP and discussesrnthe experimental construction undertaken in the development process. Thernpaper also provides project reports on two of the public projects that implemented thernURUP method.
