The San Francisco Bay Area’s primary water supply system, highly vulnerable tornseismic damage from the nearby San Andreas and Hayward fault zones, consists ofrnaging and deteriorated pipelines crossing under the Bay.rnThe 5-mile Bay Tunnel Project will replace this system with the first tunnel excavatedrnby a TBM underneath the Bay and environmentally-sensitive salt marshes withrnno intermediate shafts. Contract includes two shafts which will serve as a means ofrnconveyance, access and temporary ventilation for the completed Bay Tunnel project.rnThis paper presents the design considerations and slurry wall construction methodrnof the 136-feet deep Ravenswood shaft.
