By analyzing a real practical engineering case i.e. the Susebek drainage system in northern Hamburg, the paper shows how computer simulation of urban rainwater drainage systems is performed to evaluate the actual capacity of the existing drainage system stressed by additional discharges resulted from new urban development. It is shown that computer simulation is an efficient and indispensable tool for such evaluations and from this the current capacity and critical points and segments of existing drainage systems under given target return periods can be identified and effective and proper measures can thus been weighted and implemented.
