Manufacturers are scrambling for relief from today’srnenergy expenses and price volatility. Most industryrndecision-makers believe the solution is to seek the lowestrnavailable energy prices. Too often, managers fail to grasprnthe opportunities offered by energy management, whichrnfocuses on both consumption and prices. Industry can bernresistant to energy management for a variety of reasons.rnSimply put, energy management has no traditional placernin the typical manufacturer’s chart of organization, jobrndescriptions, and performance accountabilities. Whilerntechnology is fundamental to energy efficiency, it isrnpeople who make it work in an organizational context.rnDuPont, Frito-Lay, Unilever, and Kimberly-Clark are arnfew of the forward-thinking companies that have foundrnways to integrate energy management into their dailyrnoperations to positive effect. The Alliance to SavernEnergy is documenting these companies’ experiences in arnseries of case studies that reflect the organizational andrnbehavioral aspects of corporate-wide energy management.rnCase studies show that energy management motives andrnapproaches are somewhat varied—there is no “one sizernfits all” solution. The Alliance offers a study of industrialrnenergy management strategies to illustrate the range ofrnopportunities available to industry. Ultimately, it is arnmanufacturer’s organizational character and commitmentrnthat determine its ability to manage energy consumption.
