Biological Wastewater Treatment Workshop (sponsored by the Water Quality Committee of the Environmental Division)

This workshop is designed to provide industry specific training to pulp and paper environmentalrnprofessionals in the area of biological wastewater treatment. The workshop will provide basic informationrncovering the common types of systems found in the industry. The course will focus on real world problemrnsolving and troubleshooting, citing case histories and actual mill scenarios. The morning session will coverrnBiological Wastewater Basics and Wastewater Microbiology for all participants. In the afternoon,rnworkshop participants can elect to attend either the Activated Sludge Session or the Aerated StabilizationrnBasins (ASB's) Session. The afternoon sessions will focus on process optimization and troubleshooting.rnThese concurrent sessions will begin promptly at 12:30 PM and conclude at approximately 3:30 PM.rnThis workshop will be useful to operators, supervisors and engineers responsible for the day-to-dayrnoperation of wastewater treatment facilities. The course will also be useful to corporate engineeringrnpersonnel and consulting engineers that routinely interact with these systems.rnLearning OutcomesrnAfter successfully completing this course, participants should be able to:rn1. Describe the various types of wastewater systems found in pulp and paper millsrn2. Communicate with others at their facility about the treatment system and its capabilitiesrn3. Identify the key drivers to biological wastewater treatmentrn4. Conduct and interpret a microscopic examination of an aeration basin samplern5. Identify treatment system deficiencies and develop a strategy for addressing those deficiencies.
