Fully digital break event recording technology, using the latest CCD cameras, now offers papermakers arnnew means of solving the causes of breaks. These systems are now able to continuously monitor, in realtime,rnall of the critical locations from the wet end to the dry end of the paper machine and coater. When arnbreak occurs it is automatically stored into a permanent hard drive memory making it possible to fullyrnanalyze the events leading up to and following the break. This allows the papermaker to take the necessaryrncorrective steps to prevent the break from occurring again.rnA further advancement is real-time analysis is the ability of the cameras to analyze the image in real-timernfor any changes, and alarm the operator when they occur.rnBy using the latest technological advancements in digital image processing, these systems are now able tornoffer very high image resolution and can analyze the image for holes, edge faults and other operatingrndisturbances.rnThis technology has rapidly gained acceptance in the last two years, and based on the rapid payback, millsrnhave been steadily increasing their investments. There are now estimated to be over 200 digital systems inrnoperation on all types of paper machines and coaters.rnThis paper discusses the latest available techniques in paper machine event capturing technology, theirrnapplications and the results that have been achieved to date.
