Boron and nitrogen were implanted respectively or simultaneously into high-speed steel (HSS) in order to improve itsrnwear resistance. The results of wear tests showed that the wear resistance, in all the three cases, i.e. implanted with B, N~+, andrnB+N, increases with implantation dose until it reaches saturated values. But the hardness variations against implantation doserndo not have such an obvious tendency except for the case of N~+ implantation. The involvement of boron can significantlyrndecrease the wear rate as compared with the samples implanted only with nitrogen and increase the relative wearability overrn10 times. Asymmetrical XRD with a glancing angle of 1.5 degrees was used to analyze the phase structure of the implantedrnlayers. The result of XRD showed that CrN, ∈-FeN and (Cr□Fe)_2N_(1-X) were formed in the N+ implanted layers. δ-WB, BFe_3rnare the main additive phases if the samples were implanted with B. But the phases were not a simple sum of those phasesrnmentioned above if the samples were treated with both B and N.
