Emissions legislation and fuel taxes are causing significant changes in vehicle propulsion system design. 1. European cars are now 50% diesel to give fuel economy and increased pressure multiple injection DI systems achieve Euro 4 emissions requirements. 2. In the USA Trucks and SUVs are now 50% of sales as fuel prices are low so there is little incentive to go diesel. 3. Japan also does not like diesel for cars, but this is more traditional. A common trend is towards hybrids with Japan leading the way i.e. Toyota and Honda. American and European companies are now introducing hybrids after many years of experiments. The ultimate fuel is hydrogen as there is a limited availability of fossil fuels particularly now that China's car ownership is increasing rapidly and India may follow in a few years. It has been estimated that fossil fuel production will peak in 10 years time so we will need hydrogen soon afterwards. A few years ago some car companies were concentrating on fuel cells to the exclusion of hybrid electric vehicles because they felt that hybrids would last only a few years. Now the situation has changed. It is now realized that fuel cell development will take 20 to 30 years to achieve low cost mass production for cars so hybrids are now being introduced. This means that integrated starter-generators and propulsion motors will be required.
