Due to the complexity of paper, considerable debate occurs between researchers on fundamental aspects dealing with its mechanical response. Specifically, speculation exists regarding what role residual stress plays in the creep compliance of paper. The objective of the current research program is to resolve this uncertainty. It is hypothesized that increased residual stress levels within a paper sheet will correspond to increased creep compliance. This is accomplished by generating handsheets of varying residual stress levels and physically aging them. Residual stress and tensile creep are measured and compared as a function of time. Diminished residual stress levels resulting in decreased creep compliance are the anticipated results.
