In this paper, a torque converter is analyzed by bond graphs following differential equations describing torque converter characteristics. A proposed bond graph model represents a converter range and a coupling range exactly. In the converter range, stator is not rotating but transmitting reaction torque to output shaft. Then the bond graph of the stator must have a gyrator element. On the other hand, in the coupling range the stator free to rotate, so the bond graph of it must be omitted. A lock-up clutch in the torque converter, which makes torque converter efficiency higher, is represented by a bond graph developing the torque converter mentioned above. By using the bond graph of torque converter with lock-up clutch, it is possible to control the lock-up clutch in dynamic characteristics.
