The dispersion and homogenization of the fragile component (W) and the ductile matrix (Cu) can be significantly improved when high energy milling (HEM) is used to prepare the composite powder. Furthermore the fragile phase is finely fragmented by the HEM process. This work discusses the sintering behavior of a W-40wt%Cu powder consisting of composite particles prepared by attritor milling during 48 hours. Samples sintered at 1170℃ exhibited high homogeneity and relative density of 92%. The effect of Co and Fe contamination is investigated. The sintered microstructures are analyzed by means of optical and scanning electron microscopy. The shrinkage behavior is measured by dilatometry.
