This paper presents a two-step method for the shape and location reconstruction of a two-dimensional conducting cylinder in free space using a genetic algorithm (GA). The cross-section shape of the object is approximated by a polygon and the electric integral equations in direct scattering problem is solved using the moment method (MOM) accelerated by the fast multipole method (FMM). Reconstructing the object is divided into two steps, firstly the shape and then the location, respectively with the amplitude and phase knowledge of the measured scattering far-field data. This method has merits of both the FMM and the GA. And less iteration is needed for a reliable result compared with the normal one-step method. Some examples are given to prove that this method is efficient and robust at last.
