The addition of modern retention and dewatering agents can improve the efficiency and production rate of the paper machine. Therefore, a common requirement from the chemical suppliers is to realistically characterize and analyze the effect of various additives on retention and drainage, in the lab, prior to on-machine chemical trials.rnBayer AG has developed an automated instrument that combines retention measurements with drainage rate measurements - similar to the classic Britt Dynamic Drainage Jar and the Schopper-Riegler methods. This paper shows its application in the papermaking industry. The instrument provides a fast and reproducible dynamic filtration curve that clearly shows the influence of the parameters that effect retention and drainage, such as shear force, temperature, and the addition of other agents like starch, anionic trash, and filler.rnThis paper presents the advantages of optimizing the wet-end of the paper machine with this automated dynamic drainage and retention device. Data is also presented showing a quality control application for measuring the flocculation efficiency of chemical additives.
