This paper summarizes the results of a one-year study designed to identify the continuing education needs of practicing engineers as they make the transition to leadership responsibilities. The investigation focused primarily on engineering managers that worked in the eastern, mid-western and southern United States. A variety of interviewing techniques was used to gather data on the views of engineering managers regarding needed course topics, preferred trainer qualifications, perceived value of engineering management certification, need for customization for engineers, as well as the extent to which that need is now being filled. The respondents were also asked to express their preferences on training delivery methods such as the traditional classroom, distance learning options, and technical conferences.
