Many factors affect motivation and job satisfaction in a research and development environment. This study was conducted at one U.S.Government Research Laboratory to define what factors are important to motivation and what factors are important to job satisfaction. The results from researchers were compared to those from managers. The framework used for the study is Frederick Herzberg's Motivation-Hygiene Factor Theory. The results showed that with small differences, Herzberg's theory generally applies to this environment. Furthermore, researchers and managers agree on the importance of the various factors in motivating performance. Researchers and managers did not agree on the importance of the various factors in motivating performance.
