Stacked screens and sphere beds today are the only regenerator configurations with importance for cryocoolers. On the one hand, many investigations over the past four decades have been performed to develop methods to identify optimal regenerator configurations involving hydraulic diameter, material, outer dimensions etc. On the other hand it is known that stacked screens and sphere beds have intrinsic disadvantages relative to the ratio of pressure drop to heat transfer. Systematic investigations of fluid flow and heat transfer within matrices of regenerators have led to a concept of an optimal inner geometry. The ratio of pressure drop to heat transfer of the ideal geometry is almost as good as that of parallel plates. Opposed to the performance of parallel plate arrangements, the proposed geometry reduces losses due to longitudinal conduction within the matrix and due to maldistribution of the flow. A new fabrication technology and results of first tests for two prototypes are shown.
