In a wireless multimedia communication system different types of traffic have different data rates and quality of service requirements. In addition, the number of active mobile terminals in each service group varies at all times. So, in order to ensure the required service quality and achieve a maximum possible traffic capacity, the received power levels at a base station corresponding to different service groups should be assigned dynamically. The authors obtain the optimal received power level by maximizing a parameter called the instantaneous traffic capacity. Since conventional control mehtods such as the fixed-step and "bang-bang" liek power control suually result in either poor system stability, large overshoot or slow transient response speed, more advanced control techniques must be employed. Fuzzy neural network (FNN) is considered to be a promising method to construct an adaptive power controller. Problems concerning dynamic power distribution and optimal power control are discussed in this paper.
