Performance Analysis and Buffer Dimensioning of an ATM Multiplexer

The broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN) has been seriously considered as the backbone of next-stage telecommunication networks. The ATM multiplexer is a representative customer-side equipment whose functions include converting the information from various user terminals,multiplexing and sending it to switching network.An ATM multiplexer called BEX-AMX has been developed in Telecommunication Laboratories of Taiwan at current stage.One critical design issue is to determine the buffer size to trade off the data loss and delay requirement.The maximum buffer size of BEX-AMX is dimensioned through the calculation of an analytic method,then the result is verified by simulation.Moreover,the cell transfer delay in BEX-AMX is also studied by simulation.Two cases,with and without counter.are considered in simulation model for CBR traffic.The results show that the performance of BEX-AMX satisfies the reqnirement of specification.
