Aluminum alloy 2024-T3 is an important material used in the aerospace industry. However due to its complex microstructure this alloy is highly prone to localized corrosion. The first step in the protection protocol of these alloys is either anodization or the application of a conversion coating. Nowadays standard industrial procedures employ carcinogenic chromate ions to produce the conversion coating. Hybrid organic-inorganic coatings are promising environmentally compliant chemicals that are being investigated as potential substitutes for chromates. In the present study we report some results on the anticorrosion behavior of a Ce modified TEOS-GPTMS hybrid coating as an anticorrosion system applied to Al alloy 2024-T3. The electrochemical investigation was carried out by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and anodic polarization curves, and SEM-EDS used to evaluate the coating microstructure of the coatings.
