Effects of factors on low back pain symptoms in Korean hospital workers

To examine how low back pain (LBP) symptoms are affected by factors, a questionnaire survey was conducted in a Korean university hospital. This was part of a large study in which a total of 1,091 workers were finally determined for data analyses. Prevalence rate of LBP symptoms was 34.6% while that of the whole body was 72%. The LBP symptoms were significantly different for job/ occupation and task/activity factors whereas they were not as significant as for psychosocial factors. Odds ratio estimates were significant for some of task/ activity and psychosocial factors. Sources of error were discussed as well. This study shows that LBP symptoms are associated with multiple factors and jointly influenced by task/ activity and psychosocial factors. The study results suggest that physical and psychosocial factors be utilized for controlling LBP symptoms in industry including the study hospital.
