Projection of time-to-corrosion initiation for reinforcing steel in concrete as a consequence ofrninwardly migrating Cl- achieving a critical concentration at the bar depth has become an important aspectrnof life cycle cost analysis, materials selection, and maintenance planning. In this research, bothrnexperiments and finite element analyses were performed that confirm Cl- diffusion into concrete isrnobstructed by reinforcement and that this species preferentially accumulates in the region of the barrnclosest to the Cl- source. Consequently, time-to-corrosion determinations based upon models that utilizernthe bulk Cl- diffusion coefficient are non-conservative unless this effect is taken into account.rnDependence of this effect upon rebar diameter, concrete cover, critical chloride concentration, andrnpresence of bar splices is evaluated.
