A heavily deformed near-surface region, also referred to as 'surface layer', enhances thernfiliform corrosion susceptibility of rolled aluminium alloys. This paper studies the evolution of near-surfacernmorphology and near-surface activity as a function of various thermo-mechanical treatmentsrnalong the fabrication line. Ultramicrotomy has been used to prepare cross-sectional thin foils forrntransmission electron microscope (TEM) and extremely flat surface for scanning Kelvin probe forcernmicroscopy (SKPFM).
