For decades steam turbine propulsion plants for LNG Carriers have been the rule. It was the obvious choice in order to dispose of the unavoidable natural boil-off. rnGAZ DE France has ordered from Chantiers de l'Atlantique new LNG Carriers which incorporate two major innovations which break with traditions : Diesel Gas Electric propulsion (D.G.E) and the new CS1 membrane containment system. The first ship will be delivered end of 2004. rnAlternatives to steam turbines can be classified according to the type of fuel used. DGE propulsion with engines operated in a lean burn gas combustion mode has been considered as the best choice. rnUsing gas only in a DGE propulsion has very positive consequences on global efficiency, pollution, flexibility and redundancy, safety, maintenance, cargo capacity. rnThe principles are described, gas emissions are compared. rnThe DGE solution also brings important savings resulting from improved efficiency and increased cargo capacity. rnEconomic comparisons of 4 propulsion alternatives applied to 165,000 Cum class LNG Carriers and based on same initial displacement are given.
