The objective of the paper was to present “Design of multi stage Common Mode filter with PCB mountable components” for overcoming problems related Burst pulses such as Electric Fast Transient (EFT) and surges. The proposed method helped to evolve a step by step method to easily design a two stage CMC filter and a method to validate the design. Normally such bust pulses give surprises to the designer — which will result in time and cost overruns in the projects — if it is not taken care in the design stage itself. The design was done keeping in mind the requirement to protect costly sensitive components in the circuit. Simulations were done using CST to design a two stage filter and were validated in laboratory with actual components and was verified that the requirements are met. The results of the paper can be taken forward to solve complex EFT and surge problems in the real world without going for a trial and error method.
