The GMI Reflector Deployment Assembly (RDA) is anrnarticulating structure that accurately positions andrnsupports the main reflector of the Global MicrowavernImager (GMI) throughout the 3 year mission life. ThernGMI instrument will fly on the core GlobalrnPrecipitation Measurement (GPM) spacecraft and willrnbe used to make calibrated radiometric measurementsrnat multiple microwave frequencies and polarizations.rnThe GPM mission is an international effort managedrnby the National Aeronautics and Space Administrationrn(NASA) to improve climate, weather, and hydrometeorologicalrnpredictions through more accurate andrnfrequent precipitation measurements1. Ball Aerospacernand Technologies Corporation (BATC) was selected byrnNASA Goddard to design, build, and test the GMIrninstrument. The RDA was designed and manufacturedrnby ATK Aerospace Systems Group to meet a numberrnof challenging packaging and performancernrequirements. ATK developed a flight-like engineeringrndevelopment unit (EDU) and two flight mechanismsrnthat have been delivered to BATC. This paper willrnfocus on driving GMI instrument system requirements,rnthe RDA design, development, and test activitiesrnperformed to demonstrate that requirements have beenrnmet.
