RUAG Space has been selected to design, develop andrnto test the Solar Array Drive Assembly (SADA) for thernMercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) of BepiColombo.rnThe activity presented focuses primarily on thernmechanism. The associated drive electronics is notrnpresented.rnThe exposure to the harsh thermal and radiationrnenvironment close to Mercury resulted in morerndemanding requirements than are usually applicable forrncommon SADAs. These significantly drive the designrnand thus require the development of a completely newrnmechanism. Hardly any of the usual concepts or knownrncomponents could be taken over from previouslyrndeveloped SADA designs.rnAs a consequence, an extensive breadboard testrnprogram will be conducted to mitigate the risksrnwherever possible. Some of the results are alreadyrnavailable and are presented within this paper.
