The Walt Whitman Bridge spans between Philadelphia,Pennsylvania and Gloucester,New Jersey,and is owned and operated by the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA).This project is the first major rehabilitation of the bridge.The main bridge rehabilitation design featured many unique details,including 650,000 square feet of deck replacement,high strength steel tie plate replacement,pin and hanger retrofit,suspended span analysis,overnight deck replacement,and complicated friction collar jacking schemes to replace heavily loaded bearings for seismic performance.Traffic considerations were significant and mandated that all 6 traffic lanes be open for peak hours in order to carry the 110,000 daily vehicles.The entire rehabilitation design was completed on a fast track schedule of 11 months.This paper will discuss the background of the corridor rehabilitation program and will present some of the unique rehabilitation and retrofit measures.
