LABEN (an ALENIA SPAZIO Company) has beenrndeeply involved in development of on-board equipmentrnfor GPS-based space navigation since 1994. The gainedrnexperience has highlighted the importance of having anrnon-board navigation estimation both accurate and computationallyrnlow-cost. In this application field, the presentrnpaper describes the results of a work carried out to optimizernthe navigation solution of a space GPS receiver forrnLow Earth Orbit applications. The work consisted in therndesign of a Navigation Kalman Filter, the analysis of newrnestimation approaches and performance comparisonrnamong the developed algorithms. An existing filteringrnscheme has been analyzed and modified in order tornachieve better estimation of the spacecraft state vector andrnmulti-mission applicability.rnThe presented simulation results are based on data from arnGPS Multi-Channel Simulator considering two typicalrnorbit scenarios with different GPS visibility characteristics.rncharacteristics.rnThe response of filtering schemes to maneuvers andrnalgorithm impact on the computational load have beenrnalso investigated.
