WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks) will one day bring the speed and robustness of wired systems to the wireless world. The IEEE 802.11 WLAN standard is the first big step in this direction, supporting WLANs with a variety of data types as well as rates. This paper introduces both a novel Carrier-Interferometry chip-shaping filter and the concept of pseudo-orthogonal chips to the DSSS implementation of IEEE 802.11 WLAN. These techniques are capable of simultaneously improving performance and quadrupling the throughput of the current DSSS system. It is shown that, at a bit error rate of 10~(-3), the proposed method gains 2 dB over the current DSSS WLAN while simultaneously offering four times the throughput.
