Performance Analysis of Web Protocols in W-CDMA Mobile Satellite Systems

In this paper we evaluate and compare analytically the performance of TCP and HTTP/1.1 over two W-CDMA mobile satellite systems, namely GEO and MEO systems. First, the effect of using various TCP initial window and segment sizes on the performance of TCP in W-CDMA mobile satellite links with random frame errors will be analyzed for the two satellite systems. Second, the effect of using different data rates (i.e. 64kbps and 144 kbps), TCP initial window and segment sizes on web page download time (QoS) will be also analyzed for the two systems. Numerical results presented here show that using high data rate and large TCP segement size significantly reduces web page download time in the two satellite systems.
