A smart antenna approach employing digital beamforming is designed and developed for application in the cellular PCS band (1850 MHz to 1990 MHz). The smart antenna concept is an 8-channel system with both receive and transmit capabilities including real-time and near-real time processing using field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Applications currently being addressed for this system include calibration and digital beamforming in real-time and direction finding in near-real time. This paper is presented in four parts, which focus on the digital array receiver system, digital array transmitter system, real-time FPGA processing, and experimental applications.
