MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT BY TELE-MONITORING

Maintenance managers of port infrastructure are not only facing a very divers group of structures, so different types, ages, materials, measures and details, but the infrastructure has also different (over)loading conditions, extreme environmental circumstances and so suffers from many different- degradation mechanisms (about 25!) Besides this most of the structures are nearly completely hidden, that is burried in the ground, snowed under with live loads, drowned under water, overgrowned by sea-organisms and often occupied by ships, cranes and goods, so they are hardly inspectable and even less maintainable. A conscientious maintenance manager who is not able to overlook this all, will live in a permanent nightmare or will slowly start to became a fatalist (fig.1).
