The green strength of ceramic shell molds has been quantified numerous times in technical papers and presentations in the past. However, the traditional modulus of rupture (MOR), may not tell the complete story about shell strength. A previous paper from R&R showed how an alternative approach to hot MOR analysis gave a more descriptive representation on shell performance during casting. This paper is intended to evaluate what happens to a shell in the green state when it is subjected to a stress such as in the autoclave. One of the questions to be answered is does green MOR tell the whole story about shell strength. This paper will evaluate various binder and refractory systems for the green shell strength. The results will be compared using both traditional and alternative measuring techniques.
