PVB laminate is formed by laminating a sheet of poly(vinyl butyral) between two sheets of glass under heat and pressure. For glass lamination the polymer is plasticized with an ester such as dibutyl sebacate to the extent of about 30 parts of plasticizer per 100 parts of polymer. PVB/glass laminate is used in car windshields, bullet-resistance glass, automotive window protection, and in bomb blast resistant glaze buildings. The plasticizer migration may create defects such as cracks, voids and delaminations. An understanding of the extraction conditions of the plasticizer in PVB is thus necessary in order to optimize the lamination conditions and also to improve the quality of these laminated systems. Extraction studies on PVB, either by traditional or alternative methods, has not been openly reported despite the recent and increasing interest in safety glass and environmental effects of plasticizers.
