Because of its importance in nature the deformation behaviour of quartz in different rheological environments is a particular point of interest. Since automatic EBSD analysis progressed in the last 10-15 years this technique was used intensively to reveal insights of quartz deformational behaviour in naturally and experimental deformed rocks. The deformation mechanisms and the resulting quartz deformation microstructure are mainly controlled by temperature, differential stress, strain and strain rate. In most of the above mentioned studies the grain size of the analyzed quartz microstructure was in the order of 10 - 100 μm. Therefore, high resolution EBSD maps with a step size less than 500 nm were not specifically necessary.
