@@Since 1958,the World Health Organization(WHO) has published,at approximately ten-yearintervals,several editions of InternationalStandards for Drinking-Water and,subsequently,Guidelines for Drinking-Water Quality.In 1982,WHO shifted its philosophy from one of promoting"standards" to one of publishing "guidelines" sothat individual countries could establish specificnational standards and regulations appropriate toeach one's own sociocultural,environmental andeconomic circumstances.Today,the WHOGuidelines for Drinking-Water Quality are animportant reference for the development ofnational standards and regulations in manycountries around the world and at every level ofeconomic development.
