Combining two or more chemicals in one formulation is an effective approach to form a new fungicidepossibly with broader spectrum activity and greater efficacy. In this study, boron in the form of disodium octaboratewas added to fungicide solutions of Britewood XL and Mycostat-P with the aim of improving sapstain-controlefficacy of the two propiconazole fungicides.Effects of boron addition upon solution uptake during wood dipping, chemical stripping from treating solutions, chemical penetration inside wood, and actual sapstain-control efficacy of19 formulations were examined comprehensively. Results showed that although boron addition had no help tosolution uptake, chemical stripping and chemical penetration,it had significant influence on actual sapstain-controlefficacy of both Britewood XL and Mycostat-P,but more effective to the former. Also, the former seemed to be moresensitive tO boron addition than the latter.Experimental results showed that only O.5﹪bae was sufficient to helpBritewood XL completely prevent stain and mold fungi growth on ponderosa pine sapwood for at least 4 weeks.Based on the results of this study,it can be concluded that great help of boron addition to efficacy of Britewood XL isnot by means of increase in solution uptake, chemical stripping and chemical penetration, but by means of asynergistic action of boron and didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride. This synergistic action and its specificmechanisms are worth further studies.
