Associated factors of non-fatal suicidal behavior among high-risk first-year college students in Japan:depression, stress and attitudes toward suicide

摘要

Because of the special period of transition in life that university provides, the vulnerable first-year college students have become a targeted subgroup for suicide prevention on campus. The current study aimed to investigate associated factors of contextual and ndividual components for non-fatal suicidal behavior among this group of students.Restrictive and critical attitudes toward suicide mitigate the risk 3-fold,while a high level of both stress perceived and depression place participants at a 2-fold and 6-fold higher risk for suicidal behavior, respectively. This suggests the need to develop a multidimensional suicide prevention strategy by understanding the cultural attitudes toward suicide,by promoting stress management and by improving the treatment of epression on campus.
