Ralstonia solanacearum is a soil-borne plant pathogen that causes bacterial wilt disease in more than 200 species around the world, including important crop plants such as potato, tomato, tobacco, banana and peanut. While most strains of R.solanacearum are tropical, one group, known as Race 3 biovar 2 (R3b2), is adapted to cooler environments and can attack plants, most notably potato and tomato, in temperate zones and tropical highlands.Although extensive observations have documented the cold tolerance of R3b2 strains, there have been no studies of the mechanisms that underlie this distinctive ecological trait.
