A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF WORKS PUBLISHED IN THE HISTORY OF PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION FROM 1994-2009: PART 1

In 1994, the Journal of Business and Technical Communication published a special issue that featured articles on the history of technical communication. One of those articles, "Studies in the History of Business and Technical Writing: A Bibliographic Essay" by William Rivers (1994) [1], was perhaps the first essay review of articles targeting the history of technical writing. The goal of this special issue—to encourage faculty and graduate students to pursue research in the history of technical communication—sought to show potential researchers what had been done in the history of technical writing. The mandate for this research emerges from technical communication's continued effort to establish its claim to disciplinarity. And without research that defines its existence and its place in the history of the United States and Great Britain, at a minimum, and its contributions to these countries whose histories underpin our system of higher education, technical communication cannot be called a discipline.
